So this week I succumbed to hubby’s Gran Canarian man flu. He’d had a lovely week away with his brother but sadly brought back some form of lurgy. I’m normally fairly hardy however, as we like to share everything, by Thursday, it hit. (P.s. recipe is at the bottom, just hang in there.)

One of the funny things is that I have been taking the time recently to really listen to what my body needs as opposed to just carrying on with whatever and eaten ‘I feel sorry for me’ not so healthy foods. I know that sounds a bit noncy and woowoo but previously, had I not felt at my best, I would have got someone to go the supermarket and brought me back all sorts of ‘not so good things’ that certainly wouldn’t encourage any healing processes. Jelly beans are not the most nutritious no matter whether they say ‘fat free’ or not – BTW- fat free usually means full of sugar or a chemical ‘shit storm’.

FOOD PORN – apologies Jamie, great show though.

So, this time, I decided to stop shovelling in the ‘not so goods’ and pay attention to what was being asked for and taking a bit of time out for some self care – food porn always helps too I find. The first day it was warm, rich, tomato and red pepper soup which due to having some bone broth in the freezer, I could rustle up in 10 mins, that was followed later that day by green juice. But the big surprise came the next day and the next and today. Berry & Kale Smoothie.

Now why would that be a surprise? Well, if you gave me the choice of smoothie, it would never be a berry one. I love berries as they come but am not a fan of berry juices, puddings etc etc. So why was I craving them? ANTIOXIDANTS. My body needed as many antioxidants as it could possibly get it’s hands on. Why? to help fight whatever lurgy I had come down with and get me back on my feet asap.

Weird, oh yes but it was actually a lovely feeling to really know what my body wanted and needed.

Now, as you may know I like to do things the healthiest but quickest and simplest possible and this is the same with my smoothies too. I find it a bit tough following recipes as either I don’t have all the ingredients or I decide I don’t want one or a few of them. So here’s my recipe for lots of Berry, Beet, Kale Smoothie from this morning. Trust me it’s the laziest, sorry time saving, smoothie ever and yes I’m mentioning supermarket names.

Auntie O’s Berry & Beets Smoothie.

3 large Servings

  • 1 Cup Mixed Berry & Beets frozen mix (Asda)
  • 1 Pack Breakfast Smoothie Mix (yog, flax, oats, berry, banana – Tesco)
  • 1 Cup Raw Kale
  • 1 Cup Oat Milk
  • 1 Cup Water (or more if you want it thinner)
  • 1/2 Cup Strawberries (they were leftovers)

Into the nutri bullet for 10-20 seconds. Extra sieve if you need. Job Done.

Drink immediately or freeze (sadly not in a glass bottle, it will smash, been there, cleaned that shit up).

So, moral of the story, get your Auntie O’s in everyday not just when your body is sick and don’t make a drama out of it, it’s super simple. You’ve been told, said with love, obviously.
